Church, Civil Society kick-off Civic Awareness Conference in Wau

Catholic Church of Wau Diocese and local civil society in Western-Bahr El Ghazal launched two-day conference on Tuesday at CHTI premises featuring the role of the church and civil society in the constitution development project.

 Department of Justice and Peace Commission,                 at Wau Diocese Catholic Church organized the conference with support of Trocaire Caritas Italiana church base organization in the State.

Addressing the opening of the Conference, the governor of Western-Bahr El Ghazal State Rizik Zakaria Hassan, acknowledge the positive role of the church and civil society during the liberation period till the country attained independence one year ago.

Constitutional awareness is the vital stage to ensure that the citizens of the State have an access to their constitution, in order to know their duties and rights as well as the rights of other, said Hassan.

He pin out that constitution regulate behaviors of all citizens regardless of their status, because all citizens are equally before the law, adding that this principle can only be achieve in the country if we interpret our laws to our citizens in various ways of imparting information.

He cited that informed citizenry of the country will make the right decisions at least most of the time, thus if the people know the truth, and the fact that support the truth they will safeguard their rights and perform their constitutional duties.

Governor further noted that the constitution reflects cultural diversity, economic and social way of the country, and therefore with capacity building of the societies they soon emerge to understand the basis of how it formulated.

He urges that good constitution enable, any country to formulate a viable state where good governance and rule of law is effectively observe and applied.

He acclaims good work done by the Catholic Diocese Bishop in Western Bahr El Ghazal Rudolf Deng Majak who was among religious influential leaders among the attendants that deliberate on the important of civic awareness base on constitution.
