Is Our Freedom at Stake?

 Is our freedom at stake?

By Ater Garang

South Sudanese fought wholeheartedly as one group, regardless of their sixty four ethnic identities which they all came from, to attain Republic of South Sudan on planet earth, after many years of deadly and longest civil war in Africa continent that left an estimated 2.5 million lives lost and many others displaced.

After achieving historic independence, South Sudan seems to divert from core principles which let many people across the world stood with us side by side, during twenty two years of liberation struggle.

There is ongoing human rights violation across the countrywide, under the watch of our government, which carried out by South Sudanese against their brothers and sisters that express anguish on the path taken by the government after attaining what our hearts desire.

Innocent civilians, journalists and political opponents are arbitrary arrests, torture and threaten when they express their minds on some issues of malpractices and administration here and there in the country.

Freedom of express and assembly are fundamental principles embedded in the declaration of human right convention of 1948, which our country supposedly to observe as its obligation under UN mandate as member of the club.

A great fear of human rights violations in South Sudan growth night by night, day by day without ultimate abate to all causes that increasingly drags our nation from right footing to wrong direction.

The recent report on failed states, which ranked South Sudan fourth after Sudan, Congo and Somali, will at least raise the eyebrow of our politicians who busy build giant plans for their familys welfare in abroad, although we are not aware on techniques use by researchers during their findings about South Sudan status.

A freedom of which we unite as people under one identity, labour together as South Sudanese to accomplish what was started by our forefathers halfway, after two years of independence lap is at stake.

The government seems, to forget majority of its citizens that languish around the corners of the new nation without plans to immediately end frustration and despair that bogged down the nation gradually.

It is unfortunate for our leaders serving us in various forms to allow the same practices, which we rejected in united Sudan to continue happening after our independence.

Lack of direction, pragmatic approach and strategic visionary in the existing governance institutional resulted to vice actions, such as chronic tribal fight, cattle rustling, political and economic marginalization, mass corruption, gross human rights violation and high rate of unemployment among youth.

It always puzzle me , when I heard around me so and so died because of rampant insecurity aggravated by militia groups that are fighting meaningless wars, against regime in South Sudan, against people whom they claimed to represent and their sympathizers.

However, I am one of South Sudanese that believe in brighter future and prosperity of this nation, once the leadership of this country gives space for its citizens to influence all spheres of policy making in all levels of governance.

The voices of innocent and majority have not yet use by the leadership of this country as holistic road map to bring close the services to the people and as the centerpiece in any decision making processes, South Sudanese common men and women feel neglected regardless of their ultimate abilities that they can offer to move this country forward for the next stages that we duly needed.

Peace, stability, unity, prosperity and good governance of this great nation lies in the hands of South Sudanese people, but not the foreign nationals that our government and its development and UN agency partners prioritized in term of employment opportunities in the country.

I wonder what our leaders will tell South Sudanese citizens in the upcoming anniversary of our second Independence Day on 9th July 2013.  Since public universities remain close, economic situation of the country plunging, which deprive living of public working force in the country with their little salary unpaid?

Political crisis within the ruling party of the country remain uncertain, as well as oil dispute and other outstanding issues between South Sudan and Sudan hang as bottlenecked problems for the progress of this country.

Despite South Sudan political independence, the country is struggling to attain economical freedom too, since the oil revenue through Sudanese pipeline facilities which take an estimated 98% lion share of governments coffer revenues generation largely uncertainty after Sudanese leaders vowed to closedown the oil flow.

South Sudan citizenry still immerse of different bondages of various, such as high prevalent of open prostitutions, poverty, drugs and illiteracy which remain untold in our society today.

Its an obligation for us to be watchful throughout for internal and external threats of our freedom rather than allowing ourselves to be caught in the crossfire of political ideologies of which our country seemingly on verge to face in the near future.

Lack of trust and tolerant among our elites have already motivated many insurgencies within the country, because some youth and politicians in this country see rebellion as their only way out to power and end up creating miserable lives and lost of innocent life of their fellows South Sudanese.

Meanwhile, more affluent South Sudanese embrace the false gods of materialism, hedonism and egoism busy transporting their families and our money to foreign countries without shame.

South Sudan future progress and stability remain anxiety, unless our leaders in various levels of our society pay listening ears and motivate South Sudanese common men and women to speak out what will move this country to pay the price of really independency.

The ultimate peace and harmony in this country can be achieved through strive and efforts of South Sudanese people, foreign intervention and money will not solve our dysfunctional system, unless we do it by ourselves and they act as supplement to our efforts.

At least to beckon our late founding father of our nation Dr. John Garang De Mabior  paradigm shift policy toward nation build, where South Sudanese people are equally stakeholders in political, social and economic decision making processes.

Many South Sudanese nationalists have now been dishearten in one way or another, because our country leadership reflect nothing, but individualities that made their ways to various level of governances as an illusion and play their political cards dishonesty as they enter into power.

The years of sweet words and empty promises have gone, and therefore, our leaders should be reminded in order to reconsider their political steps, otherwise it will derail what they have already achieved to naughty.

However, the imminent failure of this country cannot be allude to one leader within the system, but all of them who served in various country organs and the electorates are eagerly waiting comes 2015 to change their allegiances for sure.

Frankly speaking our country lost it vision for its citizens, and it will take years to readjust it, simply because our leaders lack confident and trust to build this nation as their own nation whom they will be proud even after their retirement period.

I personally quite agree with one of my colleagues who told me sometimes back that our country is being occupied and lead by foreigners with reason that most of our leaders in various level of governances have acquired different nationalities in another countries, which drag them not to pay due service to South Sudan diligently.

Therefore, its always unfair for our leaders to finger pointed on youth with lame accuses that they refuse to work without justifications why the youth refuse to work? Companies, International NGOs and UN agencies prefer foreign nationals over South Sudanese in this country, practices which cannot happen anywhere on the planet earth except Republic of South Sudan.

The above mentioned institutions nowadays, cheat our Ministry of Labour and Public Service by advertising posts and put it like this only South Sudanese nationals, are allow to apply, in order to be approved but at the end they recruit foreign nationals who file themselves up across South Sudan purposely, they have heard that, this country is a land of opportunities without laws on ground that prevent foreigners to work.

The government has fail totally to monitor and find out which organizations or companies that comply with requirements related to employment opportunities and which one failed do it, by collecting all the lists of South Sudanese nationals working in those institutions and their status of payment.

We struggle together as South Sudanese during liberation, which unite us as one people and achieve our independence in the same unity, now in our own freedom what happen to our leadership not to use the same approach to keep us unite?

Besides that we shared many things in common that can easily identify us as one people and that was the main reason, why Arab brothers in Sudan couldnt able to untie that bound for many centuries when we were under their subjugations.

As per now many South Sudanese are worry, because the history appears to repeat itself in our new pasture, because it seems our leaders lack knowledge of the past experience that made us who we are today.

However, the fact that failure to learn from history makes history repeat itself, and I want our brothers and sisters, wherever they are to crosscheck our history as South Sudanese in free nation, otherwise our country is at crossroads.

There is no room left for people who might be thinking or  trying to change history to suit their own interests, because this history is immutable and you are heading nowhere with  your pompous plans.

Many great men and women in history came to the world with one aim of making history or remaking it but what happened? To their disappointment, the history did not accept to be made but instead the history remade them and became part of it.

The struggle for liberation which resulted to now independent Republic of South Sudan was not an easy and enough is enough, let reflect back what unite and divide us and work hard to avoid similar situation in our country.

Let lay a foundation that will go down in history without pains characterized by bitterness memories of difficulties which can cause fracture society, of which I believe no one among us dream of that.

We are potential people, if our government invests in human capital, by embarking on seriously to promote General and Higher educations as well as technical schools and colleges that will equip South Sudanese redundant youth with various skills that will allow them to participate effectively in nation building process.

The lacks of political will toward academic empowerment in the country shows the weakness that our country will has for many years, unless government check it policy toward education promotion.

The plan to democratized South Sudan will not be realize, because democracy is always success in countries where the largest majority of its citizens are informed, since the informed citizenry make informed choices.

The current decline of our education will lead to decline our nation in various ways that will not allow some beautiful writing in our national coat of arm achieve.

The experiences that the country underwent during its liberation should act as guiding post to the government of the republic of South Sudan in running the country and its citizens.

South Sudan paddled her canoe in 2011, 9th of July with the raising of the flag, such time was a moment of joy where all South Sudanese danced in euphoria. The climax finally was reached when the flag flew into the sky on the tallest flag post in the world, but I am in doubt will South Sudanese celebrate the secondly independence like the year of independence declaration?

Because, our leaders many times promises and paid us lip-service empty checks, but this time around I see on the faces of many South Sudanese that there is no room of lip-service once and for all, we need action and full stop.
