We the leaders of the Federation of Aweil Communities in Canada (F.A.C.C) would like to take this opportunity to express our sincere greetings to all of you. We would first and foremost like to thank our leaders back home for their courageous and wise decision to finally bring peace to our people. We also would like to thank our people who struggled so hard in the course of our struggle to bring us to where we are today.
As you all know, peace is finally here, but does it mark an end to our problems? We still have a lot of problems ahead of us which require our attention. Currently, we are faced with a huge task of rebuilding our homeland Mading Aweil. Reconstruction and rehabilitation of our motherland requires massive effort not only from Aweil citizens at home but also from those in the Diaspora of which we are a part.
Early this month, we received news of the pending famine in Aweil state. We therefore had to make contacts with people back home. From the contacts we made, we learned that, Aweil will face starvation this year which will only be similar to what it experienced in 1988. This coming famine will particularly be disastrous because rains failed last year which led to poor harvest across Aweil state. At the same time, Aweil citizens who were in displace and refugee camps are heading back home in their thousands. This situation has prompted the international community and the Aweil community leaders to alert humanitarian organizations, well-wishers and Aweil citizens, world wide of the eminent starvation.
After receiving this news, the leaders of F.A.C.C consulted with one another and contemplated on the best ways Aweil citizens in Canada should help. In discussions, we arrived at the fellow resolutions:
Ø First Aweil citizens in Canada should pay their annual contribution of $ 24 which is required by F.A.C.C from every Aweil citizen residing in Canada.
Ø Second, there is going to be a general contribution among Aweil citizens in Canada and the money will go directly toward alleviating famine at home. We agreed that every Aweil citizens should contribute a minimum of $ 50 (maximum is open).
Ø Third, we encourage Aweil citizens in Canada to do fund raisings, and that every group of people who are planning to do fund rising should alert the community so that they should get all the help they need.
We the leaders of federations are therefore asking our people to response quickly and generously towards the above resolutions. Every Aweil community leader is aware of these resolutions, so expect to be approach by your respective leader sometimes soon. We Aweil people in Canada had already plan to contribute money towards school projects at home but we now have another situation which is more pressing than our previous plans and so we encourage our fellow citizens to willingly contribute what is expected of them so that we should be able to fulfill citizenry obligations toward our homeland.
We would like our people to understand that, this task does not belong to the leaders of F.A.C.C only; it is a duty that requires every citizen to play his/her role. It is through your cooperation that we as a community will extend a badly needed helping hand to our people. There will be meetings in your respective communities and you will be notified of the same message. Pass this information to every Aweil citizen wherever he/she may be in Canada. Thank you.
Yours faithfully:
