I have seen somewhere some people tend to condemn the payment of dowry/bride-price or want changes in the way we do. Dinka communities are principally believed to be overdoing it.

Thanks for this vital topic. The issue of bride price is causing a massive outcry among southern communities, particularly among the youths. To answer your question: "Is it appropriate to make changes since we all know it is something culturally acceptable?" the answer is yes making changes to it is neccessary because not everything that is cultural is good. Again today's marriages have nothing cultural in them, they are pure commercial enterprises. I will give what I think are cons and pros of today's marriages sometimes later, I have to run now.

As a suggestion we should give our opinion and hear from our close elders in this board what they think should be the solution as right now Bor community are crying and affecting by bride-price last time or some years back marriage was not vaulable specially in Bor and recently from 2000 to 2002 when program for last boys was established this compaign was rages on until now Bor cmmunity are paying $ 30,000 -$ 40,000 USA and Bar-el grazel with pre-wedding which is almost $ 2,000 or 2,500 before people comes to dowry furthermore, Bor community elders are moblising now to hold general meeting in December, 2004 on this mater what of us?
My question is what can we do we students who are in middle of the ocean? Do we have to take our report to parents to send us a girls whom we don't know their faces? Our friends were taken which left us with sort of grief and stress in our heart, For instance my former classmate leave for Africa three months ago for the sake of getting marriage and he didn't success although girl love him since we were in Africa he manage to escape her for good three weeks he didn't manage to cover the course as two men from America paid kshs 1.8 million and another kshs 2 million and my friend paid 1.3 million although we manage to give him rienforcement things are still black.
