BY CONCERNED INDIVIDUALS FROM BAHR EL GHAZAL IN THE UNITED STATES
We the undersigned people from Bahr el Ghazal (BG), currently living in the United States would like to make the following statement regarding the current situation in the New Sudan.
A few days ago, Akuei Bona Malual, shortly after returning from Khartoum, issued a statement on our behalf (the people of BG in USA). We would want to say that Akuei's statement does not represent the people of BG because of the following:
As part of BG people here, we are able to say with certainty that under no circumstance did the people of BG mandate Akuei to speak on their behalf regarding their political aspirations. We further declare we are not aware of the existence of a political organization called Bahr el Ghazal Community.
Akuei's statement divides the movement into brothers and non-brothers, Bahr el Ghazal and non-Bahr el Ghazal. We see Akuei, with great anxiety taking aim at the most valuable of all the assets at the disposal of our people, their unity. The idea that we stand with our brothers is going to encourage regionalism and the virus of "US and THEM" in the movement, which is our last hope for a meaningful future. We therefore think that the people of Bahr el Ghazal in the US would agree with us that Akuei's talk is grossly dangerous, incredibly irresponsible and totally unacceptable We believe that the people of Bahr el Ghazal in the SPLM/A and in particular CDR Salva Kiir Mayardit who we no longer regard only as a regional leader, but as one of the Sudan national and African leaders, have contributed so much to the stability and therefore the existence of the movement. We therefore think that anything that can be said or done on behalf of the people of Bahr el Ghazal anywhere will have fallen short and would be unrepresentative if it did not encourage compromise between our leaders.
Akuei's statement is equally irresponsible where it encourage escalation of the alleged confrontation within the SPLM/SPLA leadership, because such confrontation should it happen or persist, would destroy the current peace process, discourage international support to our course (which we all know is thin, costly and essential), and opens the doors wide for the NIF government and its allies to do any combination of bad things. The results from that combination would mean that everybody should forget about all the people who have died, all the sacrifices made, and all the hope for peace and prosperity. Anything that can be described as representative of Bahr el Ghazal will not go down in history as the reason for a turmoil of that magnitude.
As people of Bahr el Ghazal and as part of the people of the New Sudan, It is high time we remind ourselves of the following
The NIF government although it has signed the six protocols, its stance, posture and activities do not reflect the new reality about to happen. To the contrary, it made the Russian Government to deliver Mig aircrafts, worthy billions of dollars, ahead of schedule at the time people are dying of hunger in Darfur has been filibustering the remainder of the peace process, has been hastening oil drilling and will be pumping out of the South 500,000 barrels a day starting January 2005, and is using the oil revenues to buy more arms and to preparing the Southern militia (known as the friendly forces) to disrupt peace in order to claim that it is Southerners themselves who are destroying peace should it be forced to sign one. The ability of the movement to ail and win the war is a result among other things SPLM's ability to mobilize and unify the people of the marginalized areas of the Sudan. At the end of the day, it is a game of numbers and South Sudan, whether separate or united with the North has everything to lose from the NIF government succeeding in destroying the African people of the North.
Many leaders in the North have said one time or another that it was them who were keeping Southern Sudanese from killing one another. If we forget everything, we can not forget this, and if everyone else forgets this, Dr. John and Commander Salva will be the last to forget that.
Many leaders of Bahr el Ghazal have been lured out of the movement and into the hands of the NIF government where they have been subjected to odd war time balances, with some being forced to become Muslims at old age to secure survival, others had to lose their lives with no body to mourn after becoming separated from their great and patriotic legacies in the movement, and those still surviving in Khartoum today are in chronic anxiety which spikes with either the government or the movement winning the war. Nothing can be more humiliating and to the people of Bahr el Ghazal than to see its leaders in such moral low ground. Anything that can be said or done in the name of Bahr el Ghazal people must not encourage more of that. We our confidence in the leadership of Dr. John Garang de Mabior and Commander Salva Kiir mayardit for our course and their judgment and ability to peacefully work out any differences, and in a way that does not compromise their ability to bring peace home. We are all ready to celebrate the crowning of your achievements.
We also seize this opportunity to congratulate CDR Daniel Deng Monydit and CDR Pieng Deng Kuol and all the officers and CANS leaders who participated in the historic meeting in Rumbek on November 16, 2004, and we salute their courage and wisdom in formulating and expressing in a timely manner and with great accuracy the spirit of the nation which reject any repeat of the terrible 1991 split in the movement. We support your findings and worst fears So that this historic position does not turn into lip service, it is now incumbent upon your leadership to find ways to protect the spirit expressed in your paper. We ask Mr. Akuei, in order to avoid any legal action, to issue a written statement and put it out the same way of the original statement, in which to apologize to the people of Bahr el Ghazal in US, for using their name in a cheap political propaganda in which the NIF government is the only beneficiary, and for attempting to bend and use a national leader for such course. In conclusion we hope that individual or groups would refrain from last minute attempts that suggest ownership of the results of the 21 year struggle other than the SPLM/A, including democracy, freedoms, etc. In fact, we think that it is criminal to attempt to belittle the current achievements in order to offer a different alternative} salvation to the people of the South Sudan. We should celebrate SPLM/A's achievements for who sacrificed for them. SPLA/M Oye!
New Sudan Oye! Peace Oye!
