This is just an excrcise of the mind, but could prove to be very helpful, especially if it ends up giving us a uniform knowledge of our local (home) towns. Aweil is a large chunk of land that has covered a vast surface of our region. And Just like some of you might, I am not familiar with the order we could arrange our towns (in Sudan's STD) by size. If I were ask to write down all the known towns in Aweilland in their order by size, of course, I would begin with Mading Aweil, but may have difficulty putting the next towns in line. Arguably, I can write: Mading Aweil, Ariath, Nyamlell, Marial Bai, Wanjok, etc. I wish I could go further than this, but it is just not easy for me to do so, and that is why I post this topic. Nothing is as good as being aware fully of your place. Hope some of us here are far better than me, and would do a very nice job by trying their best to educate us in this field by showing us their lists. Ladies and gentle men, try your best. You can guess, just like I did. Thanks to all.

This is a funny question muony, on reading it, I just realized I need to do a little research on quite a number of things. Personally, I don't know the order of Aweil towns or BG towns. There are a lot of towns but putting them in order of their sizes is pretty hard. But I was thinking of this order: Aweil, Malual Kuel, Mabior Angui, Ariath, Wanyjok, Nyomlel, Malek Alel, Rumaker, oh man I can't think any longer. Let someone who know these towns better pick it up from here.
Aca them kou muony. Definitely, your order makes a lot of sense. It could be the accurate order of those towns, exception that the list is not exhaustive. Perhaps someone will come up with his or her own order or add in more towns. I am not sure if names like Macharadut, Gok Machar, Chelkou, Sukabat, etc would make their into thislist of out towns. I am sure, some people who have had enough chance and time to roam the entire limit of Mading Aweil are within the reach of this discussion board, and I expect them to speak their mind out. Thanks again, Mr. KK for that list. I was not able tofly that far.

Woo! this question sounds amazing and interesting. M.A.M did it better, but i think the order can be like this, Mading Aweil, Marial baai, Mayielakok, Gormachar, etc.
I think Marial baai, Mayielakok, Gormachar are small compared to Ariath. I do not know the order towns any way. But your order is not correct, am very sure of that.
what a wonderful topic, it's really essential to know your own towns. i'm not fully dedicated with all towns of aweil, but i will highlight the little i know. here is my arrangement, on the railway far north is warkut/bar el arabia, Rumaker, malual kel, mabior angui, malieth achai/Ariath, wetwel, uthum, aweiltown, and alor border of wau, on east we have mayen ulem, majakakany/yargut, wanyjok, warwaar, mathol yor, on south taraleet and maletalel, on west Nyomlel, col can thok, marial baai, sukabat former macharadut, manyielakok, chelkou, Gukmachar that led to kiir, yeah dude, this far i can go. some of towns i mention were really local before the any-any war. the main town were, mading aweil as district with following commissioners Ariath, wanyjok, maleklel and Nyomlel that was before the war.
It is a very interesting topic .As far as ancient geography is concerned, my list will go this way. In western and northern part of Aweil, we had such locations and divisions as: Cholcinthok, Nyamlel,Chielkou ,Marialbai, majakamandit, majokdengdit, and bulo in the west, particularly;in north , we had Ariath, majakakueiny, malualkuel, rumaker, warguet, pamat, machar adut, adhal, ROlngut, Gongmachar , Manyiel akok and mabok kuot.
Furthermore, in the southern part of our toen, we have Yargot ,wanyjok, madhol yor, mangok and so on and so forth. No folks! ha !! i have run short of knowledge.Garang Kuot or NGong kiir, can ya guys complete or continuate my list ? Never try never know.
Thank you all very much. I am very proud of you all. You are doing a wonderful job. And as I said in the topic, I am not surprise that you are able to come up with this mind-shaping rememberance of our various towns. I knew that you were going to try your best to do this refreshment of our minds fantastically. Who knows . . . . we might be helping many other people among us to grab a little knowledge of our places . . . . our towns.
So far everyone is doing fine. But hey, Deng Santo, you might be right in suggesting that Atem's order of towns was not accurate, but if you don't mine, can I ask you whose order is accurate? It would have been much better if you had tried to tell us what you think by putting some towns in order. Our history is still fresh, most of us (you included) grew up far away from the towns we are talking about. Atem might be one of those who left Sudan at a tender age, and all she knows best are those places closer to her birth location. I think she did something obvious, that is, telling us what she knows. Thank you though for participating. Hope to see you around, perhaps, with a short list of order or at least names of some major towns.
Awach and Penhdit, guys you are doing a superb job here. It is a well done exercise! You have both reminded me and also taught me of a lot of towns all over the area. Even if the list is no way complete, there is no doubt that you have done superiorly. I am also glad that Penhdit has extended an invitation to Mr. KK, Ngong Kiir, and all those out there. Let's hope to hear from them soon, especially, if everyone has access to this discussion board.
Once again, thank you all for taking part, and for a well done job!

How are you doing today? Hope all is well with you. I am sorry that you have not understood my topic. It is ok to not be certain sometimes, and I am very pleased that you have asked for more elaboration. Well, I meant exactly what people are respnding to. I meant our "local" towns; big or small, all over within Aweil's territorial borders. Hope it is a little bit clearer this time to you, and not yet, I will be glad to try to say it again in other terms. Otherwise, enjoy the board.

You guys are rock, you have done damn good job. By they way thank you Dengdit for reminding me of this town/village named Rolngut. Rolngut reminds me of a certain song which I used and continue to like. Is Rolngut a town or village? But guys, are some of these towns that you mentioned not villages? I thought some of them were villages. Did you guys mention Alok anywere? If not, then add it to the list, it is a big Town. Alok is a potential location for Ariath Makuei University. I was thinking that most of our high schools and colleges (universities) in Aweil will be named after some of our prominent figures in Aweil such as Ariath Makuei, Bol Akok, Georgia Kwach, Manyok Bol (who was killed by Muralleen), Chak Chakdit etc in order to keep history alive for the next generation. What do you think. Have the very best of MADB day.
I read the topic you have introduced with keen interest – given the magnitude of the knowledge you had demonstrated in respect of Aweil area. It is a knowledge that leads to automatic conclusion that you are not stranger to Aweil area and its peoples. In fact your views and that of other participants in this topic are all genuine, given the knowledge each of you had demonstrated. However, in my opinion the other bigger towns apart from Aweil town should be taken in term of administrative structure than infrastructures which is a bigger problem to the whole of south Sudan.
In term of Administration when Aweil was still one of seven districts that makes former Bhar El Gazal province, prior to 1980, Wanyjok was the first town to be promoted to district when Aweil and Gogrial were made to form Eastern Bhar El Gazal province in 1982. Ariath was nominated and confirmed as district of Northern Aweil in the same year. It is this line the NIF had taken when the need arose to make Aweil as Northern Bhar El Gazal State in 1990s; both Wanyjok and Ariath became capital cities for the provinces of Aweil East and Aweil north respectively, and followed later on in 1993 by promoting Malek-Alel as the capital of South Aweil and Nyamlell for Aweil west. Now, the sequence goes as Aweil town, Wanyjok, Ariath, Nyamelell, Malek-Alel and Aroyo is renamed to become the capital for Aweil Centre County (controversially a Lou county).
Previously, and prior to 1980s Marial-bai, Gok-machar, Yargot, Malek-alel, Nyamelell, Tiar-aliet, Pamet, Wed-wiel, Madhol-yor, Ariath, Wanyjok were merely sub districts or (police station units). Akaj-kondier, Malual-kuel (Rumakier) Marol-Ajoung, Mabior-anguei, Maker, Wudhom, Tiitchok-mareng, Madwany, Rol-ayai, Bar-mayen (Khabat) or Mondit, Aroyo, Manok-dengdit were promoted to sub-district by establishing police satiations units in each of them. In the beginning of 1980s and on the wake of the emergence of Anya- nya II rebellion in 1980-1983 places such as Macar-adut, Sukabat, Manyiel-akok, Awada, Ciel-kou etc, emerged as arms’ markets were some of Bagara and Rezigat bartered their guns for lives stocks before they start their looting mission in Aweil north in the beginning of 1985. Population wise, the sequence is Wanyjok (Apouth) Wanh-Acien (Korok) Madhol (Ajoungdit), Malek-alel (Ajak), Yargot (Akanyjok), Marial-bai (Akuak-ayat) etc, however, some of areas mentioned in this paragraph are not necessarily towns for the purpose of township, but it is only for the purpose of population – like Wanh-Acien is dwarfed by Ariath. Because of the short-distance between Wanh-Acien and Ariath (Malith-acai-ariath) which is the capital for Aweil north, it is assumed that the population of the former, should be administratively part of the later for the administrative purposes.
In conclusion, having stated which is which, it is in my believe that the only established towns in Aweil area apart from Aweil town are those old sub-districts which has police station units. I don’t think there is anything call town in Aweil area, apart from Aweil town in term of infrastructure. However, the town should be taken to mean administration town, rather than infrastructure. And so, you free to start counting them from either page, from bottom or from the top – for there will be no complain at all.
I was just trying to drill my mind, like Cathy Atem by giving you list entailing some of villages and cop stations along the rail way line as well as north and west of it . As you mentioned , Rolngut is a village and a police station. i think and feel that manoi did a very good job by bringing up such a crucial topic which has taught us ,the growing in exile youngsters, of the different areas of Aweil. Like you ,this has remind of me of a place called Tiaraliet which was in the name of my favorit songs that i sang when i was a little kid.
All in all, my first thank goes to great brother, manoi Athian, and secondly to the designers and establishers of the Aweil Web including or especially you,Garang Kuot. I think without you such a great young thinkers , as Manoi would of have chances of sharing their wits with other Aweil citizens.
Greeting to you and all. Thank you so much for all that you have said about the topic, and the person in me. You have done a spectacular job here, that I think of no one who could have done it better. Your wisdom is obvious and noticeable and I am very glad that you are willing and ready to share what you know with those in the know and those who know not. We are a vagabond generation, which is growing up in spots distance away from grandparents who are the excellent professors of history, riddles, stories, fables, geography, patriotism, and so on and so forth. So, when we happen to have someone like you in our midst who knows a lot of "Yesterday," we feel lucky and happy to learn a lot from such a person. This is to say that we are more than ready to drain knowledge from your brain into ours.
And yes, you are very accurate in saying that we should think or consider our "towns" in term of administrative structure, rather than infrastructure. It is a general and a common knowledge that South Sudan is a bare land, denied the development it direly deserves by our northern brothers. With the exception of some few districts, most of the districts in South Sudan have one big town each and numerous administrative units. So when I wrote this topic under "our towns" I did it with three major reasons in my mind: First, to help those who don't know all these various towns and administrative units all over Aweilland, for instance, I myself. Secondly, to refresh and renew the memory of those who once knew or have heard of some of these places sometimes back, but have faded away with time. Thirdly, to instil and inspire into the people, especially the youth, the thirst for the development in the near future all over our lands. With your brilliant contribution as well as of those who have spoken so far, I believe that our minds are fresh again with the pictures of our respective places of birth. Once again, thank you for coming out and for pouring out to us what you know.
KK and Penhdit,
Just to share with you that I am also reminded of Tiaraliet. And, like you, I have a couple of songs that mention Tiaraliet, too. By the way, what was or is so special about it? A historical place or what? I am just wondering because our previous musicians were fond of it. Anyone in the know?
My thanks to all.

Once again, thanks for the compliments. Of course I have a lots and (especially in history) of stuff that may benefit the willing person, however, I also have the ability to learn from others. Most of the former “Red Army” (yourself included) had a lots of benefits the peoples who hadn’t stand a chance to be in Ethiopia in those days, like myself can also benefit from them – the histories are written in accordance with an eye witness’ account, and so I can also take from your mind, and so the life goes.
Manoi, somebody had told me about you, and apart from the way you conduct your arguments in the Gurtong, I grew to like the way you conduct your political arguments, and therefore feeling proud of you and had thought that, in every community there are nationalist I must confess. As, I was told that you hail from Tonj, I thought people of Aweil should also be proud of your likes to be amongst themsleves. Only through mutual understanding between the various communities of the south shall the solution of our communities’ problems could be found. Instate of spoiling other peoples’ abilities through malicious evil intent against other peoples’ progress as witnessed in the past through the work of other people, the way you have shown will makes you the role model for our unity.
Again, it is in my sincere belief that, the knowledge you had demonstrated about Aweil was not without any consequence, you loves the peoples of Aweil too, and so you need being applauded for. It is said the person who familiarizes himself/herself with the way of lives in other communities, do not always says anything bad about that community. Like myself, I knew every corner of Tonj area when I had a chance to be amongst those staffs who in 1983 conducted 3rd population census. I have traveled from Mock Akot Wut, Ajak-lier, Luac Kouth, Luac-Aguer Adel, Abeim Mayar Mareng, Noi Ayei Kuot, Lou Ariek Mawien, Lou Paher, Apouk-Jurweir, (Padoc) to mention but few. So, whenever I dare to say something about Tonj, I would do it in a somewhat from point of knowledge – some people talk from the point of ignorance. You are better equipped to be liked by our peoples.
Thank you a lot Ateny Wekdit for this good job. You have turned Mading Aweildit inside out, you are really a blessing on this board.
My brother Manoi, I am very proud of you. The topic you brought up is very important for all of us who have not seen home for a long time. We had forgotten all these towns, they sound very sweet in my eyes and ears. For example, I had forgotten this famous place called Tiaraliet. It is importan for us to remind ourselves of where we come from because we are getting lost. I think Tiaraliet was a place where people used to fight a lot over grassing land because it is always link with some fight. And as we know our people used to fight in toch/toj where they grass their cattle, so Tiaraliet must be toch/toj.
Receive and accept my greetings. It was very nice to go over your writings. Thank you so much for all that you had said about me. As Deng Santo put it, you are truly a blessing on this board and all other avenues where your participation is very crucial, for instance, Gurtong. Your knowledge and modesty are some of the available features that the thoughtful youth will surely benefit from by an act of immitation. With no single doubt ever, you are our role model.
Yes, I am from Tonj by birth, and from Aweil and all the other places by natual rights. By the way, let me first thank you for sharing with me that you had once happened to be in "my " homestead, i. e. Noi Ayii Kuot. I have never been in most of the places you had mentioned in Tonj, yet you had been there long ago. Can you see the puzzle it has when I say that I am from Tonj and you are from Aweil while I don't know a lot of places in the area I claim to be mine, but are familiar with you? That is why I say that I am from Tonj only by birth, but from everywhere else in our lands by nature rights.
Most of the young people of our country are not familiar with their territories of births. These young people (me included) who became children of one tragedy - - the war, have the best chance to be children of all and from all. The nature through painful and bitter civil war has given us the best opportunity ever to be nationalists - - people who know how to kiss the goodness of one's birth place and at the same time, embrace tightly the national interest or goal.
You are right, I am always interested to know and know more about the people of Aweil and their plaecs. I have the same interest in all our people and borders. However, I think it is save to say that I know more of Aweil people than the people from where I come from. It is a lengthy story that I think this page can't accommodate this time. I will end my writing by thanking God for your wonderful family and the kind of exemplary life you are playing on this board. I am also thakful for the great honour and respect the Aweil youth have for your amazing family. Please keep that candle burning. Many of us will see that light and will walk to it.
Deng Santo,
I am greaful for your compliments. Thank you very much for appreciating the topic. As I said, I thought the topic would be a practical experiment in our minds. I have no doubt that many folks here who have access to this board are reminded, if not, taught of unheard places before. Oh! Tiaraliet rocks! Did you suggest that it might be a toch because it is frequently mentioned with something to do with a fight? You might be right. Is anybody around here who comes from that area?
Thanks to all.
