Our government wants waking up, and, as a private appeals to the office of His Excellency, the State Governor and his subordinating officials. Long years we made a tryst with destiny, and now the time comes when we shall redeem our pledges, not wholly or in full measure, but very substantially. At the stroke of midnight hour, when the world sleeps, Southern Sudan will wake to life and freedom. A moment comes, which comes but rarely in history, when we step out from the old to the new, when an age ends, and when the soul of a nation, long suppressed, find utterance. It is fitting at this solemn moment we take the pledge of dedicating to the service of our beloved Southern Sudan and her people and to the still larger cause of humanity. At the down of history southerners started on an ending quest and trackless centuries are filled with her striving and the grandeur of her success and her failures. Through good and ill fortune alike Southerners had never lost sight of that quest or forgotten the ideals which gave them strength. We end today a period of ill fortune and Southern Sudan discovers herself again. The achievements we celebrate today are, but a step, an opening of opportunity, to the greater triumphs and achievements that await us. Are we brave enough and wise to grasp this opportunity and accept the challenges of the future? Freedom and power brings responsibility. That responsibility rests upon this State Assembly, a sovereign body representing the sovereign people of NBeGs. Before the birth of the peace we have endured all the pains of revolutionary and liberation and our hearts are heavy with memory of this sorrow. Some of those pains continue even now. Nevertheless the past is over and it is the future that beckons to us now. That future is not one of ease or rest but of incessant striving so that we may fulfill the pledges we had so often taken and the one we shall take today. The government must establish quality education as a means of achieving some of these goals. Education is intended to produce good citizens inspired with desires to serve their fellow men. The government has to provide medical care and social security as a way of improving amenities for a better society and ensure equal opportunities to all its citizens, eliminate exploitation and discrimination. These provisions are rallying spirit of nation building. The service of this State means the service of millions who suffer. It means the ending of poverty, ignorance and diseases and inequality of opportunity. The ambition of the greatest men of our generation has been to wipe every tear from every eye. That may be beyond us, but as long as there are tears and suffering, so long our work will not be over. Leaders should need love within themselves. This implies that love begets unity, unity procreates peace and peace is the beginning of progress. . May God bless you all?
