The leader of the Popular Congress Party and an advocate Islamic Fundamentalism, Hassan al-Turabi said in Southern Sudan legislative Assembly Monday that religion will be isolated from politics to achieve a voluntarily united Sudan. He said there is need for cultural, religious and political freedom in the Sudan in order to develop as one united nation. Even if one puts on a religious attire in which ever form, one is right to do so with out restriction, he stated. This followed remarks by Gov. Malik Agar, thedeputy chairman of the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement, that no nation in Sudan has ever been formed since British left due to religious imposition, racism meant enact the country in to an Arab Islamic state, cultural despising, inferiority complex and lack of will to disburse resources equally.Turabi said many countries in the whole world that are now typical of equality, freedom, liberty, democracy and good governance such as Britain and European Union have some times before fought wars of religion and politics. This was in response to questions from some ministers in the Government of Southern Sudan which ask how possible Turabi could be part of a secular united democratic Sudan when he himself was implicated as the engineer in a coup detat that brought up the current regime in Khartoum and declared jihad war against the South. He instead said jihad is derived from ji-al that means to react. However, to Southerners, these issues of religion among others count for the tendency of Southern Sudan to secede in the referendum of 2011.``We are trying to unite the country despite this crisis, tensions and centrifugal forces that tend to push the country apart, Turabi stated Monday. According to Turabi, the country can be united under high federation. If Southern Sudan separates in 2011 referendum, issues of national identity card, passport and currency can be negotiated to bethe same if the South wishes, he added. We will be neighbors if the South separates and there will be a degree of relationship, he continued. However, the chairman of the Umma Party, Sadiq al-Mahdi said Sudan can be united voluntarily with a new constitution and respect of Sudanese diversity and religion. According to him, some regimes including his have been trying to cope with the colonial characteristics left behind by the British. These came in his response to questions as to how he hopes Sudan can possibly be united on a new basis that is unanimously acceptable to Sudan People when a regime he lead failed to set up such structures that are compatible with diversity of the Sudanese people.Political envy derails objective opposition
The all political parties conference, which ended yesterday at Nyakuron cultural centre in Juba, has exposed much of the hidden agenda among the Southern Sudanese political parties, especially in regards to their determination in effecting their campaign for an independent Southern Sudan through the referendum. Their boycott of their conference has played a centre stage role. Many of these political parties have before shown much political maturity and patriotism in having their own independent nation in which Southern Sudanese can not be second class citizens in their own country when they have chance of becoming first class citizens. This has been bestowed up on supporting the CPA to its letter for it provides an option for Southern Sudan in this referendum of 2011. However, the parties were possibly hit by envy and have seemingly been detangled. I will therefore like walk us down the implications of boycotting the conference. Among the reasons for boycotting the conference were that there are some hidden agenda between the northern political parties and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Movement
